Appendix: List of Activities Undertaken by the Network, 2003-2004

Consensus-building among the main partners

  • Monthly meeting of representatives of the associations that are board members to discuss the current situation, develop medium-term forecasts, exchange information and work collaboratively (15 meetings over a period of 15 months).

Active issues

  • Forum 2003 - Organization, fundraising and follow-up of Forum 2003, held during the Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal (RIDM). This year’s event focused on theatrical releases of documentaries. The Forum was held in November 2003 and 150 people attended the event. A report is now available in English and French on the Network’s Web site.
  • Information was regularly sent by e-mail to the Network’s board members on current issues related to documentary.
  • SODEC - Efforts were made to have a distributor’s commitment trigger funding for feature documentaries. Feature documentaries for release in commercial cinemas are now eligible for financing with the financial commitment of a distributor, up to a $250,000 ceiling.
  • National Film Board of Canada - Introductory meeting and initial reflection on possibilities for working together on concerns shared by the NFB and the Network. Exchanges on the issue of online and digital distribution of documentaries.
  • Société Radio-Canada (SRC) - Meeting with the management of Radio-Canada on increasing the presence of documentary on the station and improving broadcast conditions (flexible time slots, in-house promotion, etc.). Ongoing analysis of statistics concerning documentary programming on Radio-Canada. / Press conference in March 2004 to urge Radio-Canada not to pull out of arts and culture documentary programming.
  • Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) - Introductory meeting between the Network and the management of CBC for mutual familiarization with and discussion of issues such as the definition of documentary, in-house production, and international production projects.
  • Telefilm Canada - Introductory meeting with the Network, discussion of its action plan and priorities.
  • Canadian Television Fund - Preparation and presentation of a brief on the future of the Canadian Television Fund.
  • Canadian Independent Film and Video Fund (CIFVF) - Letter of support for the CIFVF in light of the federal government’s reduced contribution. / In January 2004, participation in a brainstorming session with the Fund’s executive to explore new avenues for financing and managing the Fund.
  • Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) - Since February 2004, the Network has been a member of the CHRC steering committee on the training of documentary filmmakers and producers. This study was triggered by DOC.
  • Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television - Presentation of recommendations to the Academy regarding awards attributed to the documentary sector. These recommendations were accepted for 2004-2005.
  • CTV - Joint action and preparation of a press release on the CTV’s intention to request permission to the CRTC to transfer $5 million from documentary to drama series. The result: the CTV withdrew its request to the CRTC.
  • Reality television - Preparation of a project for the audiovisual community and the institutions to develop a shared definition of reality TV.
  • Meeting with the Communications department of UQÀM in order to explore ways of working together and developing a “documentary” stream as part of a potential undergraduate degree in film.
  • Meeting with students in administration at the École des Hautes études commerciales, along with the RIDM, in order to promote awareness of Canadian documentary.
  • Consultations and discussion with the management of the Grande nuit du cinéma to bring back the award for best documentary at the SRC official gala.
  • Meetings with DOC and Hot Docs in Toronto.
  • Meeting of the Network and the RIDM with delegates of the États généraux du documentaire and the Maison du documentaire de Lussas (France), organized by ERAI (Espace Rhône Alpes International) of Québec, with the goal of establishing ongoing collaboration between the parties. / Teleconference in January 2004 to pursue these efforts.
  • International contacts were set up with, among others, Docuzone (Kees Ryninks), Docspace (Amy Hardie, Emma Davie), États généraux du documentaire, É tudo Verdade, Brazil (Amir Labaki), Sheffield International Documentary Festival (Sirkka Moeller), and Visions du Réel, Switzerland (Jean Perret).
  • Ongoing reflection with the Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal on the idea of setting up a Maison du documentaire.
