Public Sector, Private Sector: Love Match or Marriage of Convenience for
Documentary?
Forum 2008
The Documentary Network hosts a discussion on accommodating the interests of public
— and private — sector documentary funders and broadcasters in Quebec and
Canada.
The first order of business will be an update on developments at the Canadian
Television Fund (CTF), where recently proposed changes would have a major impact on
documentary and independent production. A panel of CTF executives and representatives
from private and public television will be on hand to give us their perspective on the
situation.
In Part Two, we ask the audience to join in a constructive discussion on the outlook
for the documentary sector, with the aim of identifying major orientations for a national
policy conference. For the Documentary Network, this exercise will be the first phase of
a joint action and the preparation of briefs to industry and government
designed to improve the synergy and vitality of the documentary sector as a whole.
The discussion will be led by producer Nathalie Barton, President of InformAction
Films and Chair of the Documentary Network.
The 2008 Forum is intended for documentary professionals from across Quebec and
Canada. Members of the documentary community are invited to be part of the half-day
meeting, on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the Grande Bibliothèque de Montréal from 8:30
am to 12:00 noon. Admission is free.
The Documentary Network would like to thank Radio-Canada, SODEC, Téléfilm Canada and
Télé-Québec for their financial support.
